Maciej Śmietański

Chirurg, artysta i performer, prof. W praktyce medycznej zajmuje się chirurgią rekonstrukcyjną złożonych defektów przedniej ściany brzucha, operuje w szpitalu Swissmed w Gdańsku, jest wykładowcą Gdańskiego Uniwersytetu Medycznego. Ukończył także Wydział Rzeźby i Intermediów ASP w Gdańsku w pracowni Grzegorza Klamana, prowadzi zajęcia z anatomii na ASP w Gdańsku. Członek Rady Programowej Fundacji Wyspa Progress, członek grupy SMRk+ oraz RAISE, współtwórca projektu LABOARTORIUM, twórca kolekcji sztuki ALGA. Wystawa „Knock-out Exile” (2023) stanowiła reakcję na rozpoczęcie ery przeszczepów ksenogenicznych. Od 2021 współtworzy projekt METAMISTIC wraz z Jackiem Kornackim. dr hab. n. med. Założyciel Sekcji Leczenia Przepuklin TChP, organizator polskiej szkoły leczenia przepuklin, lider misji humanitarnych w Afryce i Azji, współzałożyciel Ukraińskiego Towarzystwa Przepuklinowego, dwukrotny doctor honoris causa.

Surgeon, visual artist and performer, Professor (habilitation) in medical sciences. Founder of the Hernia Treatment Section of the Polish Society of Surgeons and organiser of the Polish school of hernia surgery; leader of humanitarian missions in Africa and Asia; co-founder of the Ukrainian Hernia Society; twice awarded honorary doctorates. In clinical practice he specialises in reconstructive surgery of complex abdominal wall defects and operates at the Swissmed hospital in Gdańsk; he also lectures at the Medical University of Gdańsk. He graduated from the Faculty of Sculpture and Intermedia of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (studio of Grzegorz Klaman) and teaches anatomy at the Academy. He is a member of the Programme Council of the Wyspa Progress Foundation and a member of the art groups SMRk+ and RAISE; he co-created LABOARTORIUM and the ALGA art collection. His early work addressed ethical issues in transplantation in the project ‘Be a Conscious Organ Donor’ (with Jacek Kornacki). In later projects he focused on social issues after the systemic transformation and on the relationship between scientific progress and ethics; Knock-out Exile (2023) responded to the advent of xenotransplantation. Since 2021 he has co-created METAMISTIC with Jacek Kornacki.
